SPOON Magazine Vol 1 | Aerobic Utopia | 1996

HISTORY

We started SPOON Magazine on the internet in 1996, when there was only 100 000 sites active ( 1), it was probably the first ever fashion site called “magazine”, and one of the first fashion photography site (2).

SPOON Magazine VOL 1 on paper was released later same year, when a printer made us a pretty decent price proposal.

It became very quickly a favorite media for photographers and artists who found there an open minded space to freely express their creativity and visual language away from commercial pressure.

We used to launch each magazine with free access party, and of course an all night open bar at Paris Fashion Week as for us : it had to be fun too!

First issue was just 64 pages, small square format 17X17 cm and stappled (3) , and big drama in the fashionistas’s world : with almost no text (what kind of punk can do this!)!

For Vol 2 and later made it bigger format 26X26 cm and some issues reached 240 pages.

We left the company in 2000 with Volume 7, and we wont comment here what happened after, but it stopped in 2001. Some folks later tried later to make an contemporary arts mag with the same logo and name, it lasted 2 or 3 issues.

Then here it is : we are ready to start again this utopian project, and we will try to make it the same way and only way we know :

with no compromise, and with a bit of fun in it.

Notes :

1 : Take a look of what was internet in 1996/1997

2 :At the time being our address was www.spoon-magazine.com (unfortunately even WayBack machine has no archives of  it)

3: the very newly established concept store Colette in Paris did not wanted to distribute the first issue (SPOON Magazine VOL 1)because of the staples : too dirty!. One extra reason to say ” dont’ believe the hype“: on later issues they asked to have the exclusivity of pre-sales during Paris FW :-)! And by the way, we stopped staples with Vol 3 not because of the “dirty” look but for technical and budget reasons.
